Join Me, by Danny Wallace - I Laughed, I Cried, I Joined
Danny Wallace is an absolute legend. Not only did he stand up for what he believed in while paying a solemn tribute to his late uncle Gallus, but he also managed to write a witty, first-hand account of his boyish project to boot.
After attending uncle Gallus’ funeral, Danny is spurred on to finish creating the collective of 100 people his uncle was never able to complete. 100 soon becomes 1000 after NOT having a bet with his good mate Ian at the pub (1000 symbolising the number of people from Gallus’ village in Switzerland). As the cult, err I mean ‘collective’ grows, Danny’s girlfriend Hanne becomes increasingly suspicious and less gruntled as Danny pulls out excuse after excuse to cover for his abnormal behaviour.
Join Me, takes Danny all over the world as he meets a colourful group of people who become known as his ‘Joinees’. Danny, or ‘The Leader’, as his followers would prefer to call him, inspires this motley crew of do-gooders to perform random acts of kindness every Friday.
I won’t give away the ending, but I think it is safe to say Danny achieved his initial goal and would have made his late uncle Gallus proud. He also won, I mean earnt, the pint off Ian!
All in all, a light-hearted account of one mans quest to cult-ivate the goodness in people everywhere. I laughed, I cried, I joined. Good luck putting this one down.
