Winning Your First Poker Tournament

All in all, winning my first poker tournament was, in a word, thrilling. Really thrilling. There were a few close hands where my heart was actually pounding in my chest, which was amazing at the time because I rarely play poker, and even more rarely play poker for any considerable amount of money.

And yet, there I was the other day. Edge of my seat, heart going like a jackhammer, getting really excited about hands as they were dealt to me. I think I even held my breath for a few of the really close hands.

Overall the experience was pretty amazing. It helped that I wasn’t playing for real money (although the top three finishers got gift cards). Even so, the excitement and camaraderie with my fellow players was unmatched.

I also used the tournament as a learning experience. Like I said, I don’t play poker a lot, so I used the time to gauge opponents’ behavior, decipher my odds of winning each hand, and study the rules a bit more in depth. A lot of what happened at that tournament was luck, I know that, but I’m going to use what I picked up to play even better in the future.
